From 2017 to 2019, Vandevelde was part of the artistic direction at Extra City Kunsthal, alongside Antonia Alampi (Savvy Contemporary, Spore Initiative) and iLiana Fokianaki (Kunsthalle Bern). Together, they shaped the institution’s exhibition programme. Within this framework, Vandevelde curated a lecture and performance program as well as an exhibition.

Unravelling Citizenship

What “acts of citizenship” can we undertake in this complex world? In dialogue with the group exhibition Extra Citizen, curator Michiel Vandevelde developed the public program Unravelling Citizenship. For three months, Kunsthal Extra City becomes a forum where the concept of citizenship is dissected and explored from various perspectives.

Eating Each Other

Western European cities have become patchworks of minorities. Yet, Western “enlightened” values still dominate. As a potential tool of resistance against an all-consuming liberal ideology, Eating Each Other presents the strategy of “re-appropriation”: blending dominant patterns of thought and behavior with one’s own knowledge, customs, and rituals to create entirely new forms.

The question remains: who eats, and who is being eaten?
