Just as nature’s seasons change, fresh interpretations have the power to reshape classical art. Thus, the boundaries of dance and music blur in this concert choreography. Choreographer Michiel Vandevelde adds an additional layer to the iconic texture that composer Max Richter already infused into Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in 2012. Richter’s composition comes to life thanks to the BRYGGEN string ensemble, which moves across the stage in endless patterns while playing the score from memory. A solitary dancer weaves in amongst them, both contradicting and emphasising the composition.
To the rhythm of Richter’s fascinating reinterpretation, Vandevelde reflects on notions of progress, change, and adaptability – once again hugely relevant amid the conservative grip in which Europe is currently held. An enchanting evening that reminds us that, in the face of change, there are always new horizons to discover. Because culture is constantly in motion, just like the musicians in four seasons changed.
